The Media

E-Newsletter No. 135             March 2025

Contrary to last month’s newsletter, we decided to postpone for one month the discussion about the Second Amendment and our citizens’ right to bear arms.  Instead, we need to talk some more about the concept of a Free Press and some of the realities about the mainstream media.

As we noted last month, it is difficult to have freedom of speech, when conservative content is censored or suppressed.  But one of the more troubling aspects of the past several years was the growing Leftist bias of the mainstream media.  In years past, journalism used to be straight up objective reporting of events and facts.  However, the mainstream media changed (“progressed”) and opinions (Leftist narratives) began to be injected into “news” stories.  Fortunately, many citizens began to realize that we were being “misinformed” by the media about Russian collusion, Covid, peaceful protests, Hunter Biden’s laptop, the January 6th “insurrection”, etc.

What is now happening to the mainstream media is simply a free market outcome.  The public is no longer buying the Left’s narratives.  And the media has begun to pay the price for their misdeeds, as ABC and George Stephanopoulos recently agreed to pay President Trump $15 million to settle a defamation (libel) lawsuit. Broadcast television (ABC, CBS and NBC) along with CNN and MSNBC have seen their viewership decline dramatically.  The same downward trajectory is happening with the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Fortunately, there is now a variety of new sources where people can go to get their news (and opinions).  Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter (now called X) was a huge boost to freedom of speech.  And Mark Zuckerberg has now admitted to the “errors” of Facebook and has pledged to be a supporter of free speech in the future.  (We’ll see how well that plays out).  In addition, conservative podcasts are experiencing significant growth.

Many conservatives had begun to wonder why so many of our country’s citizens were beginning to accept the “promises” of Socialism.  It’s not because Socialism has a very good track record.  Winston Churchill once said, “Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy,” and “The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”

Unfortunately, the Left’s influence on college campuses is still prevalent and must continue to be combatted.  (Thank you, Charlie Kirk and TPUSA). And there is no doubt the mainstream media outlets will continue to disseminate the propaganda of the Left, but it appears that the tides are beginning to turn.
